Heel styles..a crash course

If you’re a true connoisseur of shoes it’s important that you know your stuff...about shoes that is. That includes knowing all the different styles of shoes (even the ones you don’t wear) and being able to confidently identify them. While I’m a shoe lover I would admittedly struggle to converse in detail with regards to the specifics of shoe styles. Given this, I thought it might be worthwhile for us to brush up on our shoe knowledge. So I’ve compiled a cheat sheet so we can all fake it until we make it!  




Pump High Heels

Pump Also known as a court shoe which can come in any height. Classified by a seamless vamp (the section of upper that covers the front of the foot) with no buckles, straps or ties.

Stiletto High Heel

Stiletto A high thin heel that is at least 10cm / 4 inches high.

Peep Toe High Heel

Peep Toe The tip of the shoe box (front of the shoe) is cut away to partially expose the toes.

Open Toe High Heel

Open Toe The shoe box (front of the shoe) is cut away to expose most of the toes.

Sling Back High Heel

Sling Back A backless heel with a strap that crosses over the Achilles.

Kitten High Heel

Kitten A low heel with a small curve.

Platform High Heel

Platform A heel with a thick sole.

Mary Jane High Heel

Mary Jane Closed, low-cut shoe with one or more straps across the instep.

T-Strap High Heel


Heels with a vertical strap running from the tow box of the shoe to a mary-jane strap over the instep.

D'orsay High Heel


The inside or both sides of the shoe are cut away revealing the arch of the foot. Additionally the vamp (the section of upper that covers the front of the foot)  is cut very close to the toe box.

Wedge High Heels


There is no distinction between the heel and the sole. It is a single, solid piece that increases in height from the front of the shoe to the heel.

Ankle Strap High Heel

Ankle Strap

A strap which is attached to the back of the shoe that wraps around the ankle. 

Mule High Heel


A shoe which the foot slides into with no back or strap around the heel.
