For many of us, we intuitively know the unwritten rules of heel wearing however, with the chaos that is life we sometimes need a little reminder. So, to my fellow obsessed hear wearers or, to the ladies that are new to heels…welcome to heel wearing 101.
MAKE SURE IT FITS
It’s impossible to walk properly in heels that are either too large or too small. You’ll spend your time either trying to stop your shoe from flying off your foot or hobbling around because of ill-fitting shoes. Either way you’ll look ridiculous.
Don’t walk flat footed. Plant your heel followed by the ball of your foot when you walk. The surest way to spot a heel wearing novice is by their flat foot gait.
Never ever take your shoes off and walk in your bare feet with shoes in hand. It doesn’t matter how much your feet hurt. There is nothing worse (well there is but you know what I mean) than seeing a lady dressed to the nines with no shoes on. So, to avoid this, look to purchase some foldable ballet flats that you can always keep in your handbag for emergency situations like these.
Not only are foldable flats fantastic for saving your feet but they can also help to prolong the life of your shoes. If you know you’re going to be walking some distance in your heels, swap them out for your foldable ballet flats until you reach your destination. Your feet and your heels will thank you.
QUALITY & QUANTITY AREN’T MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
You might be tempted to splash out on those cheap heels but you may find you pay the true price later. While this certainly isn’t a case of quality over quantity (as I’m an advocate for both) it might be wise to test them before you wear them for any long periods.
FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT
Whether you’re a seasoned heel wearer or new to the game, you can still be put off guard wearing a pair of heels (particularly skyscrapers) that you’re not use to. While practice makes perfect, until such time as you’re comfortable and confident in your heels, fake it till you make it.
Above all else, so long as you love wearing heels and how they make you feel, then that’s all that matter.
