If the shoe fits

If the shoe fits

I find shopping for shoes online delightful (my husband wouldn't agree given my spending habits) but I can see how for some it could be daunting. How do you know the right size to buy? Also, those worldwide conversion charts can be confusing (that’s a topic for another time). So I thought I’d bring together a way to easily determine the right size shoe to buy for you and your family.

So, you want to find the right fit!  After all, if Cinderella's shoe fit why did it fall off? The general consensus across the online world is that the best way to determine the correct shoe size is to get busy with a piece of paper, sticky tape, ruler and pen.

Liveabout.com provides instructions that are comprehensive and simple to follow for how to measure your feet for the correct fit. In a nutshell they recommend you tape a piece of paper (large enough to trace your foot) onto the floor. Pop on a pair of socks and take a seat. Place your foot on the paper and trace your foot holding the pencil upright. Repeat for the other foot. Measure the length and the width and consult a size chart that includes measurements.

Interestingly, Liveabout.com do note that width measurements are just as important as length. I must admit I did chuckle at their comment that it “can make a world of difference when it comes to finding comfortable footwear”. They obviously weren’t talking about heels as Christian Louboutin has been quoted as saying “I would hate for someone to look at my shoes and say, 'Oh my God! They looks so comfortable!’”, however I digress. You can also find the correct fit for the width of your foot which is represented by a letter preceding the numerical size of the shoe e.g. 8B...who knew!

While all this may arm you with the correct shoe size, not all manufacturers prescribe to the exact measurements for each size. You may find that some manufacturers are a small or large fit, for example I’m a half size larger in Jimmy Choo’s and Louboutin’s are notorious for being a small fit.

At the end of the day, the most important thing you can do when shopping online for shoes is to ensure that the online retailer offers a refund policy that allows you to return your shoes for change of mind and wrong size. Happy shopping!
